Comparative Quantifiers and Plural Predication

چکیده

Somewhat surprisingly, there is little work addressing this question even though there are two distinguished traditions each concerned with a subset of the paradigm. On the one hand, Generalized Quantifier Theory (GQT) offers an analysis of expressions as in (1)a,b as run of the mill quantifiers, while the theory of comparative constructions, analyzes expressions as in (1)d,e as amount comparatives. The only disputed area is the status of (1)c which is claimed in Keenan(1987) to require an analysis as GQ employing a discontinuous 3-place determiner quantifier more ... than ... while Kennedy(2000) sketches a treatment in terms of comparative syntax and semantics. The main goal of this paper is to present an argument in favor of a uniform analysis of all expressions underlined in (1) as comparative constructions. The argument is based on the observation that comparative quantifiers and amount comparatives impose the same constraints on their environment. More specifically, both require that the NP and VP predicates they combine with range over pluralities. I will present the outlines of a uniform analysis that explains these observations as a consequence of the

Context, Collectivity and Emptiness

The paper investigates a dynamic alternative to plural e-type strategies, which is general enough to model the truth-conditional as well as the dynamic aspects of both increasing and non-increasing quantifiers. It combines two proposals for plural dynamic semantics: (i) atom predication denotes a set of assignments and set predication denotes a set of sets of assignments and (ii) a witness cond...

Plural Predication

My thesis consists of three self-contained but interconnected papers. In the first one, 'Word and Objects', I assume that it is possible to quantify over absolutely everything, and show that certain English sentences containing collective predicates resist paraphrase in first-order languages and even in first-order languages enriched with plural quantifiers. To capture such sentences I develop ...

Vagueness and Plural Predication

This paper addresses the question of how to model the application of vague predicates like tall and bald to plural subjects like John and Mary and the men. In other words, we are interested in developing a logical analysis for natural language sentences like Mary is tall and The men are bald. In the past 30 years, much research has been devoted to finding the proper logical framework to model t...

Resolving uncertainty in plural predication

Plural predications (e.g., "the boxes are heavy") are common sources of ambiguity in everyday language, allowing both distributive and collective interpretations (e.g., the boxes each are heavy vs. the boxes together are heavy). This paper investigates the role of context in the disambiguation of plural predication. We address the key phenomenon of "stubborn distributivity," whereby certain pre...

Monotonicity and Collective Quantification

This article studies the monotonicity behavior of plural determiners that quantify over collections. Following previous work, we describe the collective interpretation of determiners such as all, some and most using generalized quantifiers of a higher type that are obtained systematically by applying a type shifting operator to the standard meanings of determiners in Generalized Quantifier Theo...
